Regionalna Dyrekcja Lasów Państwowych w Szczecinku jest jedną z siedemnastu dyrekcji powołanych na mocy ustawy o lasach z dnia 28 września 1991r. (tekst jednolity Dz.U. z 2011 r. Nr 12, poz. 59 z późn. zm.), wchodzących w skład Państwowego Gospodarstwa Leśnego Lasy Państwowe.
Regionalna Dyrekcja Lasów Państwowych w Szczecinku prowadzi nadzór nad działalnością 30 nadleśnictw (podzielonych na 408 leśnictw) oraz 1 Zespół Składnic Lasów Państwowych. Przeciętna wielkość nadleśnictwa wynosi 21 tys. ha.
